Our first "Professors' Pōrt" at Māori Point is a very special wine for us, a journey that began back in 2014. Bottled (with cork stopper) in a distinctively unorthodox glass bottle - reflecting the academic and scientific background behind the Māori Point team - this is traditional fortified wine made from Pinot Noir grapes and locally-distilled spirit. It shows classic aged port character from its extended time maturing in oak barrels, yet it also shows the gracefulness of Pinot Noir, which is a very different grape from those that are usually used in port. Look for flavours of dried cherries, walnuts, dates, cinnamon, caramel, burnt caramel, and chocolate. It is velvety smooth with a long, warming finish. Pair it with dark chocolate or cheese, and once opened it is fine for about a month. Ready to be enjoyed now, and should age well for at least 15 years.
